The Rokakku Challenge is a western interpretation of the traditional Japanese fighting competitions and was first proposed in the UK by Martin Lester in an item that appeared in The Kiteflier July 1986 issue.
Subsequent to this the rules appeared in The Kiteflier of July 1987 which gave the groundwork for the competitions for the following 10 years run by The Kite Society at many kite festivals around the UK. At this time competitions were held for both Individual and Team fighting.
The competition stopped being run as the UK Rokakku Challenge in 1997, although Rok fights were still taking place at many of the kite festivals. In April 2009 George Webster wrote an article about the Challenge and the rebirth of the fights (individual only) organised jointly by The Kite Society and STACK UK. These new rules are an expansion the old ones. The challenge will continue in 2011 at a number of events around the country.
Alongside the 1987 rules was an interpretation by John Barker.
